When it comes to careers, it seems like an endless journey of ups and downs. Just when you think you are making progress in the right direction, you read an experts work and feel a million miles away in comparison. Progress seems to go one step forward and two steps back, which is disheartening, but at least that one step forward is a step in the right direction!
Initially starting out in ones career, I think the hardest challenge to overcome is self doubt. You know you’re good, hence why you got hired over your competition. But once working alongside experienced and successful colleagues, insecurities start to kick in.
Once I realised that no one is perfect, and no one knows all the answers, you stop beating yourself up over little things. No one knows everything, and your boss doesn’t expect or want you to. Directors love employees that are prepared to work hard for the good of the company and who are willing to learn. Fitting in nicely with company culture and office politics is also a must. But once you have these work ethic traits you have nothing to worry about!
“The biggest obstacle in performance isn’t not knowing what to do; it’s not doing what we already know” Alan Fine
