I mentioned the other week that I would go into more detail regarding backing up, so here goes.
We had a scenario lately where a single FileMaker 9 file was around 1.2Gb and initially it was taking around four minutes to back up, which admittedly is quicker than a FileMaker 6 file. The problem was that we wanted to back the file up every hour and, of course, the users weren’t happy to wait for four minutes every hour throughout the day.

Last Thursday was the UK TechNet meeting in Cookham. It was a fantastic day with some great presentations. My presentation on the new features in FileMaker Server 10 seemed to go down well and led to some interesting discussions on deployment and backup strategies (I’ll talk more about some of these ideas in a future blog).

If you’ve ever worked on a FileMaker database that is of any decent size, you’ll know how time consuming it can be to locate the correct Table Occurrence in your Relationship Graph. Well the team at myFMbutler have very kindly developed a little application to help, and what’s even better they give it away free. The only downside is that it only works on Macintosh, but as that is my preferred development platform it works for me.
